    An HI survey of the Centaurus and Sculptor Groups - Constraints on the space density of low mass galaxies

    We present results of two 21-cm HI surveys performed with the Australia Telescope Compact Array in the nearby Centaurus A and Sculptor galaxy groups. These surveys are sensitive to compact HI clouds and galaxies with HI masses as low as 3E+06 Msun, and are therefore among the most sensitive extragalactic HI surveys to date. The surveys consist of sparsely spaced pointings that sample approximately 2% of the groups' area on the sky. We detected previously known group members, but we found no new HI clouds or galaxies down to the sensitivity limit of the surveys. If the HI mass function had a faint end slope of alpha = 1.5 below M_{HI} = 10^{7.5} Msun in these groups, we would have expected ~3 new objects. Cold dark matter theories of galaxy formation predict the existence of a large number low mass DM sub-halos that might appear as tiny satellites in galaxy groups. Our results support and extend similar conclusions derived from previous HI surveys that a HI rich population of these satellites does not exist.Comment: Accepted for publication in A&

Particular attention is paid to adjectives that are only non-predicating when they modify certain types of nouns; both agentive nouns and degree nouns are decomposed semantically into two distinct semantic elements, one of which consists of the referent (referential element) and another which consists of either an action associated with the noun or a quality already expressed by it (non-referential element). The other main focus of the thesis is denominal adjectives which have a structure like that of modifying nouns and which are differentiated from regular quality attributing adjectives via their semantic structure that does not express a single quality. The semantics of regular predicating adjectives is discussed, and it is found that predication requires an adjective to attribute a quality directly to the noun referent. Adjectives which have a function that does not meet this description are then restricted to the attributive (prenominal position).     Mitochondrial DNA signature for range-wide populations of Bicyclus anynana suggests a rapid expansion from recent refugia

    This study investigates the genetic diversity, population structure and demographic history of the afrotropical butterfly Bicyclus anynana using mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA). Samples from six wild populations covering most of the species range from Uganda to South Africa were compared for the cytochrome c oxidase subunit gene (COI). Molecular diversity indices show overall high mtDNA diversity for the populations, but low nucleotide divergence between haplotypes. Our results indicate relatively little geographic population structure among the southern populations, especially given the extensive distributional range and an expectation of limited gene flow between populations. We implemented neutrality tests to assess signatures of recent historical demographic events. Tajima's D test and Fu's FS test both suggested recent population growth for the populations. The results were only significant for the southernmost populations when applying Tajima's D, but Fu's FS indicated significant deviations from neutrality for all populations except the one closest to the equator. Based on our own findings and those from pollen and vegetation studies, we hypothesize that the species range of B. anynana was reduced to equatorial refugia during the last glacial period, and that the species expanded southwards during the past 10.000 years. These results provide crucial background information for studies of phenotypic and molecular adaptation in wild populations of B. anynan

    The Genetics of Basal Cell Carcinoma of the Skin

    BCC is the commonest cancer in European-derived populations and Australia has the highest recorded incidence in the world, creating enormous individual and societal cost in management of this disease. The incidence of this cancer has been increasing internationally, with evidence of a 1 to 2% rise in incidence in Australia per year over the last two decades. The main four epidemiological risk factors for the development of BCC are ultraviolet radiation (UVR) exposure, increasing age, male sex, and inability to tan. The pattern and timing of UVR exposure is important to BCC risk, with childhood and intermittent UVR exposure both associated with an increased risk. The complex of inherited characteristics making up an individual’s ‘sun sensitivity’ is also important in determining BCC risk. Very little is known about population genetic susceptibility to BCC outside of the rare genodermatosis Gorlin syndrome. Mutations in the tumour suppressor gene patched (PTCH) are responsible for this BCC predisposition syndrome and the molecular pathway and target genes of this highly conserved pathway are well described. Derangments in this pathway occur in sporadic BCC development, and the PTCH gene is an obvious candidate to contribute to non-syndromic susceptibility to BCC. The melanocortin 1 receptor (MC1R) locus is known to be involved in pigmentary traits and the cutaneous response to UVR, and variants have been associated with skin cancer risk. Many other genes have been considered with respect to population BCC risk and include p53, HPV, GSTs, and HLAs. There is preliminary evidence for specific familial aggregation of BCC, but very little known about the causes. 56 individuals who developed BCC under the age of 40 in the year 2000 were recruited from the Skin and Cancer Foundation of Australia’s database. This represents the youngest 7 – 8% of Australians with BCC from a database that captures approximately 10% of Sydney’s BCCs. 212 of their first degree relatives were also recruited, including 89 parents and 123 siblings of these 56 probands. All subjects were interviewed with respect to their cancer history and all reports of cancer verified with histopathological reports where possible. The oldest unaffected sibling for each proband (where available) was designated as an intra-family control. All cases and control siblings filled out a questionnaire regarding their pigmentary and sun sensitivity factors and underwent a skin examination by a trained examiner. Peripheral blood was collected from these cases and controls for genotyping of PTCH. All the exons of PTCH for which mutations have been documented in Gorlin patients were amplified using PCR. PCR products were screened for mutations using dHPLC, and all detectable variants sequenced. Prevalence of BCC and SCC for the Australian population was estimated from incidence data using a novel statistical approach. Familial aggregation of BCC, SCC and MM occurred within the 56 families studied here. The majority of families with aggregation of skin cancer had a combination of SCC and BCC, however nearly one fifth of families in this study had aggregation of BCC to the exclusion of SCC or MM, suggesting that BCCspecific risk factors are also likely to be at work. Skin cancer risks for first-degree relatives of people with early onset BCC were calculated: sisters and mothers of people with early-onset BCC had a 2-fold increased risk of BCC; brothers had a 5-fold increased risk of BCC; and sisters and fathers of people with early-onset BCC had over four times the prevalence of SCC than that expected. For melanoma, the increased risk was significant for male relatives only, with a 10-fold increased risk for brothers of people with early-onset BCC and 3-fold for fathers. On skin examination of cases and controls, several phenotypic factors were significantly associated with BCC risk. These included increasing risk of BCC with having fair, easyburning skin (ie decreasing skin phototype), and with having signs of cumulative sun damage to the skin in the form of actinic keratoses. Signs reflecting the combination of pigmentary characteristics and sun exposure - in the form of arm freckling and solar lentigines - also gave subjects a significantly increased risk BCC. Constitutive red-green reflectance of the skin was associated with decreased risk of BCC, as measured by spectrophotometery. Other non-significant trends were seen that may become significant in larger studies including associations of BCC with propensity to burn, moderate tanning ability and an inability to tan. No convincing trend for risk of BCC was seen with the pigmentary variables of hair or eye colour, and a non-significant reduced risk of BCC was associated with increasing numbers of seborrhoeic keratoses. Twenty PTCH exons (exons 2, 3, 5 to 18, and 20 to 23) were screened, accounting for 97% of the coding regions with published mutations in PTCH. Nine of these 20 exons were found to harbour single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), seen on dHPLC as variant melting curves and confirmed on direct sequencing. SNPs frequencies were not significantly different to published population frequencies, or to Australian general population frequencies where SNP database population data was unavailable. Assuming a Poisson distribution, and having observed no mutations in a sample of 56, we can be 97.5% confident that if there are any PTCH mutations contributing to early-onset BCC in the Australian population, then their prevalence is less than 5.1%. Overall, this study provides evidence that familial aggregation of BCC is occurring, that first-degree relatives are at increased risk of all three types of skin cancer, and that a combination of environmental and genetic risk factors are likely to be responsible. The PTCH gene is excluded as a major cause of this increased susceptibility to BCC in particular and skin cancer in general. The weaknesses of the study design are explored, the possible clinical relevance of the data is examined, and future directions for research into the genetics of basal cell carcinoma are discussed

    Mainstream literature on long-term performance of initial public offerings focuses on long-term underperformance. Because underperformance is an anomalous phenomenon, many authors search for explanations based on financial market imperfections. More recently, however, the attention shifts from underperformance to long-term performance in general. This induces the search for other than financial market imperfections in explaining under- or outperformance. This article presents the idea that in many companies the preparation for the IPO and the IPO itself may bring organizational change. It searches for IPO-related organizational change in The Netherlands with interviews of Dutch corporate officers. The research shows that an IPO primarily changes financial management and financial reporting, but that other types of organizational change may also be relevant. Moreover, long-term stock market performance was on average higher in companies where IPO-related organizational changes were reported than in companies where the changes were not reported.

    The curious case of J113924.74+164144.0: a possible new group of galaxies at z = 0.0693

    J113924.74+164144.0 is an interesting galaxy at z = 0.0693, i.e. D_L ~ 305 Mpc, with tidal-tail-like extended optical features on both sides. There are two neighbouring galaxies, a spiral galaxy J113922.85+164136.3 which has a strikingly similar 'tidal' morphology, and a faint galaxy J113923.58+164129.9. We report HI 21 cm observations of this field to search for signatures of possible interaction. Narrow HI emission is detected from J113924.74+164144.0, but J113922.85+164136.3 shows no detectable emission. The total HI mass detected in J113924.74+164144.0 is 7.7 x 10^9 M_solar. The HI emission from the galaxy is found to be extended and significantly offset from the optical position of the galaxy. We interpret this as signature of possible interaction with the neighbouring spiral galaxy. There is also a possible detection of HI emission from another nearby galaxy J113952.31+164531.8 at z = 0.0680 at a projected distance of 600 kpc, and with a total HI mass of 5.3 x 10^9 M_solar, suggesting that all these galaxies form a loose group at z ~ 0.069.Comment: 5 pages, 1 table, 6 figures.     Exploring the concept of hostmanship through “50 cups of coffee”

    This article explores how hospitality academics and students understand, interpret and experience hostmanship. Building on a literature review which outlines and discusses the development and definition of hospitality, this exploratory study is framed by an interpretivist approach. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 46 hospitality academics, staff and students (50 were initially invited). Each individual interview focused on uncovering the individual’s understanding of and attitude towards hostmanship, and was transcribed before being analysed by both researchers in order to identify themes that could be used to investigate the concept of hostmanship. Findings show that a genuine connection, the pro-active behaviour of the host, and surprises led to a welcoming feeling for the guest. An unwelcome feeling was mostly created when protocols and systems were prioritised above the human being and, on occasion, specific, unpleasant behaviour of the host. When people were asked to define hostmanship, the following aspects were mentioned most: being and acting sincerely from the heart, and creating a true connection between people.
